Harvesting Vegetables on Rooftops, Tugure Develops Greenhouse

JAKARTA – As a form of commitment to supporting environmental sustainability and community empowerment, PT Tugu Reasuransi Indonesia (Tugure) has introduced an innovative idea by utilizing the rooftop of its building as a farming area. This initiative is also part of the company's contribution to supporting food security in the area surrounding Tugure’s office.

Tugure’s office building, located in the Cikini area of Central Jakarta, now stands out from other office buildings. In addition to being adorned with ornamental plants, the rooftop has been transformed into a "greenhouse," where several types of vegetables, such as spinach and water spinach, are thriving.

This eco-friendly building management concept utilizes the hydroponic method to grow vegetables on the rooftop. Through this approach, Tugure has successfully made use of vacant space productively while also promoting a greener environment in the middle of the city.

To ensure the success of this program, Tugure collaborates with local residents who are part of the Sehati Cikini Farmers Group. This group is known for actively utilizing unused land along riverbanks for farming, producing vegetables and fruits that are often distributed to local residents, particularly those in need.

The harvest from Tugure’s greenhouse is designed to support the activities of the Sehati Foundation, helping to meet the food needs of the Cikini community. Rudi Hartono, the coordinator of the Sehati Foundation, expressed his appreciation for Tugure’s initiative.

"This collaboration creates great opportunities to support local food security. The planting of spinach and water spinach on Tugure’s rooftop has only been going on for about three weeks, yet we are already able to harvest," said Rudi during the first harvest event on Monday (January 6, 2025).

This initial harvest successfully yielded 59 kg of spinach and water spinach. Interestingly, the vegetables produced are of superior quality, with greener and broader leaves compared to similar products on the market.

"With the hydroponic method, this spinach and water spinach are classified as organic vegetables, free from pesticides or chemicals, making them safe for immediate consumption," Rudi added.

Tugure’s President Director, Teguh Budiman, explained that the development of the greenhouse is not only a commitment to environmental sustainability but also a form of community empowerment.

"Today's first harvest, which includes spinach and water spinach, will be entirely donated to the Sehati Cikini Farmers Group Foundation. We hope this program will provide sustainable benefits for the surrounding community," said Teguh.

The first harvest event was also attended by representatives from the Menteng District, including the Acting Head of the Social Welfare Section of Menteng District, Sunardi. He expressed his appreciation for Tugure's efforts in creating an innovative solution despite limited land availability.

"This activity is very beneficial and should serve as an example for other buildings to follow," Sunardi added.

Furthermore, Teguh also mentioned that Tugure plans to expand the greenhouse area to increase production capacity.

"We plan to add a variety of vegetables such as lettuce, pak choy, tomatoes, and bird’s eye chili so that the benefits of this program can be felt even more widely," he concluded.

This initiative reflects Tugure's commitment to continuous innovation, not only in the reinsurance business but also in making a tangible contribution to the environment and society.
